I suspect the flatbed would pay for itself in the first batch of scans. There are faster and higher quality solutions than the flatbeds, abet at a much, much greater price point. If that’s the case, don't bother with any flatbed. Some owners refuse to use USM, as if that is a moral imperative. The 4990 isn't the issue at your small sizes. Shadow delineation is superior in the 4990 by a tad. I don't see much of any improvement above 3200 ppi., so higher resolution wasn't the buying criteria. I had a 3200 and bought a 4990 for the speed and digital Ice. If you can' t get a bigger print than 5x7 from 35mm, the issue isn't the scanner but the film or scanning procedure. Its absurdly simplistic and ain and simple. I see this figure floating around occasionally.

Yes, an Epson Flatbed scanner used properly with good scanning software and good source media (negatives/slides/photos) can definitely produce good scanned images for printing photos. I have one of the larger mounted photos of our original Family of myself, 6 Brothers and one sister hanging on our Living Room wall and it is excellent even at "close up" viewing. My 35mm film and slides were exposed with a Leica M3 and Minolta SLR both with various lens. The 2 1/4 negatives were exposed with a Hasselblad and some with a Twin Lens Reflex with Nikkor lens. Frankly, the first one I printed on the larger size ( using my Epson 2200 printer) I was concerned that I may be wasting the paper and ink - but to my surprise, it was excellent. Also, some of these are printed on two sheets of 13 x 19 which produced (when mounted) very nice 26 x 19 photos. I have printed many of the 2 1/4 x 2 1/4 scanned images on 13 x 19 Photo paper. 35mm are good up through 8 x 10 printing but has to be an excellent source media for printing larger photos. I use VueScan scanning software and I have scanned 35mm thru 4x5 negatives (from the past 55 years) and I get good printed photo results. Surely the newer Epson flatbed scanners are better than the previous models such as my 2450 scanner. Plan is to print 16 by 20s (or so) on my Epson 4800. Photoshop, but I'd hope to get throught them quickly.
